Cork is a back of cork oak tree. Our corks grow naturally in Portugal.
Only mature oaks over 20 years old are suitable for removing the bark.
Before being put into operation, the cork bark is placed in the open air and left in the heart of the sun for a few weeks to six months. Fresh air, sun and rain stimulate chemical changes that improve cork quality. Upon completion of this process, the sheets flatten and lose 20% of their original moisture. The sheets are then washed, leaving them soft and supple, removing excess tannin.
Cork is a unique raw material of natural origin, during the production of which not a single tree was harmed: the renewal of oak bark is a natural process of tree growth. Usually cork is harvesting every nine year.
